Learning Spanish has dramatically increased in popularity and most individuals make the decision to do so long after they have left school.

It is a well documented fact that the best time to learn a language is in the juvenile years but that does not necessarily run true when considering which age group are the better students. Quite often learning a language is forced upon children when at school and as a result they either enjoy it or show no interest. The same cannot be said of a mature student whose goal is to acquire the skill of a new language and will therefore look for the best and most convenient method of achieving their goal.

The first choice individuals have to make is which method they will use to learn Spanish. There are generally two popular methods to choose from, the more traditional method of the classroom lesson or a learn Spanish software program, each has it’s pro’s and con’s but the software method certainly has more benefits than drawbacks.

The differences between a software course and a day or night class cannot be greater. The first allows the user to fit in their studying around their available time, no matter when that is whereas the rigid timetable allows no flexibility what-so-ever.

Cognitive Benefits – Children in foreign language programs have tended to demonstrate greater cognitive development, creativity, and divergent thinking than monolingual children. Several studies show that people who are competent in more than one language outscore those who are speakers of only one language on tests of verbal and nonverbal intelligence (Bruck, Lambert, and Tucker, 1974; Hakuta, 1986; Weatherford, 1986). Academic Benefits – Studies also show that learning another language enhances the academic skills of students by increasing their abilities in reading, writing, and mathematics. A 1994 report on the impact of magnet schools in the Kansas City Public Schools showed that students in the foreign language magnet schools had boosted achievement significantly (Eaton, 1994). It reported that students in the language magnet’s first kindergarten, starting in the program in 1988, had surpassed national averages in all subjects by the time they reached fifth grade. And the foreign language students performed especially well in mathematics. Similar studies with students in intensive second language programs show these students scoring as well as or better than their monolingual peers on standardized achievement tests in basic skills.
