From what I have heard from my friends who are in the same situation as you (already knowing Spanish and taking French after) it actually makes French easier to learn, because they are two very similar languages in many aspects.

For example, the word for computer in French and Spanish is both “ordinateur”.

You could choose both because they are not that different from each other and I agree with the people above but you have to understand that although you learn one or another you will always find difficult to understand everybody. They don’t speak the same in the whole South America and not all Spanish people speak the same either. You could watch videos on youtube, you may find the differences because I personally prefer Spanish accent (yes, the accent is different as well) but try to find serious videos because you’ll find people laughing at each other. I mean, we all have different words and accents and pronunciation even inside the same country.

It’s an online magazine too and is just so fun and a great help in learning Spanish. You can find it at. Also, any electronic translator would be nice. If you can learn Spanish, you can learn French. If you study your words, numbers, etc in french, it will be easy to learn. Good luck!

It’ll definitely be easier. The spelling and accent are very different between the two, but you already know the basics of Romance grammar. That’ll help you a ton.

My recommendation would be that you finish learning Spanish until you attain fluency and THEN learn French. That is what I did and it is definitely worth it. Especially if you speak it “pretty well.” If you switch now, you will end up speaking two half languages and speaking one fully is much much better. Not to mention that Spanish will probably be more useful.

Though there are many variations in local dialect, I never heard of more than one Spanish language. I still remember the Spanish language textbooks I saw in high school with the words, “El Camino Real” on the cover. That is “The Royal Road” in English.
I would learn the language of the countries I planned to visit first. Most all of Central and South America speak Spanish.
Brazil, of course, speaks Portuguese.
There is formal Spanish and familial Spanish. A foreigner speaking familial Spanish might be considered offensive as you would not be a relative.

I agree with Peter M. It really depends on what you are going to use more so where you go on holiday more, where you might want to live when you’re older or if you know any friends who speak either type of Spanish.
I live in England so I learn the Spanish from Spain rather than Latin America but if I lived in the US i’d probably want to learn the Latin American version
