The political answers to this question are obvious, so let me speak about the educational ones. Learning another language, and it does not really matter which, enhances a student’s ability to understand how English is put together. Very few people really understand English and how it works these days, because grammar is rarely taught in US schools. But if you learn another language, such as Spanish, you, as a student, will start to understand etymological and other reasons for English phrasing and vocabulary.

Also, it is hard to learn a language without touching upon the cultures of its origin. This will bring about an understanding of other peoples, their customs, their costumes, their habits, their food, literature and music and how similar or different they are to the student’s own.

People who know only one language are limited and restricted. Those who know more than one benefit from a better level of understanding of the world as a whole.

Spanish is necessarily useful to anyone who lives in the US, because of its obvious history, neighbours and politics.

Mr Obama is not being controversial, but sensible. He wants to broaden the outlook of the population of the US. He knows that once you know something of a language, you cannot un-learn it, so your view of the world is wider than before, and therefore better.

I do not think there ever was a president of the US who did not want this.

I dont know why but it is ridiculous… Not even everyone in America knows english so lets learn that first… and spanish isn’t the most spoken language but rather the 4th most spoken (the rank goes as follows: Mandarin (form of chinese), English, Hindi (spoken in India) then Spaniish etc.). I understand if the policy was to force all children to learn a foriegn language but to have a choice (as NY and many other states do). To me this sounds like another no child lefdt behind law, he’s trying to make all children in some way smarter but these bills need serious funding and apparently we can’t do that as shown by the faluire of No Child Left Behind… Go McCain!!!

First off America has no documented official language. I think we should make English as our official language, but since we haven’t yet that’s the reason we see signs in motor vehicles and tests in multiple languages. It’s very valuable to know Spanish for several reasons. One the Spanish speaking population is the fastest growing population. Many people that speak Spanish as their first language do speak English as well, but when it comes to business are more comfortable with someone that speaks a little Spanish. I was born and raised in America, but will say that we are very arrogant about expecting everyone to conform to our ways. You visit most other countries and many people speak multiple languages. Shouldn’t we all be open to expanding our horizons. We should all be able to benefit from diversity. In appearance Obama looks like a regular black man, yes. However, he was raised by white folks and is bi-racial. It amazes me how many people are waiting to fail so they can blame Obama, immigration, or someone else. It’s a better idea to think of how we can all just step our own game up…
